INTERDOMINION HISTORY.

The year 1962 saw the first Interdominion played between Australia and New Zealand Taxi Industry. I say this as in reality Australia never really had an Association or Club consisting of Taxi drivers/industry people.

Little were we to know that it was to lead to the formation of the current Australian Taxi Golf Association as we know it today. Little I have found out about these early years and perhaps people looking at this history might be able to fill in the blanks to up date this proud history.

Interesting to note that the New Zealand Taxi clubs had been playing golf since 1954 yet the first of these Interdominions was played in at the Kogarah Golf Club in New South Wales in 1964. Have not found any information or meeting minutes to answer this question but we do know that it was decided to play every two years between the two countries. So in 1966 it was played in New Zealand and in 1968 played in Victoria at the Patterson River Golf Club.

This game situation continued on through to 1976 and in 1977 when the decision was made to form the National Taxi Golf Association. With this formation came minor changes to the Interdominion format until the last Interdominion (Game 22) was held at the Liverpool Golf Club in 2008. From reading what material I have tracked down numbers on both sides of the "ditch" were falling and so decisions made to abandon these games.

However we still have members of both New Zealand and Australia that make an annual visit to each others Championships and although not large numbers it still keeps a liitle rivalry between the two Countries going.

However, talk around that perhaps we could add New Zealand to the Australian roster making it a seven year roster. Early days but from my point of view I think that this would only enhance our relationship with New Zealand. Extremely early days and at this stage not high on my agenda till we get our own house in order.

The Interdomions had as far as I could track down four trophies that were played for and for history purposes I have included photos and information of each.

I would like to thank Michael Reimer, Thomas Parsons and Gordon Wilson of New Zealand and Peter Branigan, Russell Armstrong and Michael Baungarten of Australia for their kind assistance in my research.

Kind regards

Chris Johnson
